Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to some common questions about Doulas and birth support below.
What is a doula?
A doula is a professional that provides emotional, educational and physical support to families during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, abortion, and end of life or other transitions. Most people are familiar with birth doulas (also known as labor doulas) who provide physical support to birthing people while they have the baby. Doulas aim to empower and advocate for parents to have a birth that is intentional, whether it is at home, in the hospital, or in a birth center. Doulas assist parents create birth goals and ease other family members of meeting the gestational persons’ birth needs so the family can support the birthing person in other ways. Chrysalis Doula Services offers full spectrum support, which includes abortion support, birth support, and postpartum services.

A doula is: a birth expert, an advocate, a professional.

What isn't a doula?
A doula is not a doctor. A doula is not an OBGYN. A doula is NOT a midwife but CAN be if they went to midwifery school. This means that a doula is not the person catching or tending to the baby, but rather to the person giving birth. Most people elect to have both a doula and a midwife present for their birth and they make for a good team.

A doula is not: a doctor, midwife, nanny, or martyr.
